How to Bypass the Office Firewall to Download from Bittorrent
by Jonathan - All Posts By This Author

Bittorrent is the most popular peer-to-peer file sharing protocol today. If you’re among the millions of people using it, chances are, you are quite addicted to it; however, most offices today block bittorrent clients or even the ports that the protocol uses so that their employees can be more productive at work.
If you happen to be employed at a company that follows the same policies, you don’t have to lose hope because there are still ways to bypass that pesky firewall the IT department set up.
Firewalls, Firewalls
A computer firewall can either be a hardware or a software solution, also called a personal firewall. Normally, when a firewall blocks your access to bittorrent, you will simply have to configure it so that the ports used are forwarded to your computer properly.
In an office setting, you most likely won’t have access to the firewall in your network unless you can sneak into the server room undetected or treat an IT staff member to a nice cold can of beer.
You don’t have to do anything fancy just to bypass the office firewall. As long as you have a good web browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari, and you have access to the Internet, you can bypass and use bittorrent anytime you want.
You will need the following:
- Web browser – Any browser can do such as IE, Firefox, Opera, or Safari.
- Access to the Internet – You must have acces to the Internet; otherwise, this method won’t work.
- Torrent File – The torrent file acts like the “shortcut” of the file you want to download.
Doing the Trick
First, point your browser to torrelay.com and wait for the page to load. At the bottom of the screen, click the “Torrent Relay Web Client.”

You will be asked to upload a torrent. Torrent Relay allows three methods of uploading torrents: Locally, or uploading the torrent file stored in your computer, by providing a direct URL to the torrent file, or by using the Mininova ID, if you use Mininova to get your torrents.
Getting the Torrent File
Simply download the file and upload it to the site. The easiest way is to obtain the URL of the torrent file so you don’t have to download it into your computer. To do that, simply right-click on the download link and select “Copy Link Location” (Firefox) or “Copy Shortcut” (Internet Explorer). Paste the link on the box provided and click upload.

Select the file in the torrent that you wish to download. The download will start immediately. As you know, torrent download speeds do not start really fast, so be patient as the transfer rate speeds up. When the download process is complete, a link to download the file into your computer will appear.
How it Works
Torrent Relay is a free web service that downloads the torrent file and later sends the file to you when it is complete. It is just like asking your friend to download a file for you at home and having him send it to you afterwards.
When you upload a file to Torrent Relay, its servers will download the file for you using their own custom bittorrent client. Your computer is not technically downloading the file. After the process is complete, you will simply be downloading the file from their servers as a normal file download.
The Catch
Since the service is free, you may sometimes experience ‘Server Busy’ errors because there are probably a lot of people like you who want to bypass firewalls. There is also a limit to the file size of the torrents you can download using the service. Currently, the site allows a file that is 800 mb (megabytes) in size, more than enough to download that fresh new episode of your favorite TV series or the latest release of your favorite Linux distro.
One Last Warning
Be very careful when using this in the office. Using it regularly may raise some suspicion from your IT department since they may notice high traffic coming from a site called “torrelay.com” and block your access to it. Once the site is blocked, you cannot do this specific hack anymore. Use it wisely and enjoy!
* But when you’re not in the office you should know the tips on how to download safely.

If I was in your company’s IT dept and I found you doing any of these ‘tips’ the first thing I would do is make sure you were fired for breaching the company’s security systems.
Firewalls are there for a reason. To protect you, and the company you work for. To do anything thats been written in this article is not only stupid, it’s dangerous and WILL get you fired. At best. At worst you can be arrested and taken to court for wilful damage of a company’s property.
Honestly, just wait a few hours until you get home and then download whatever you want from your own pc.
@bdgr:
The article is not stupid, you are. The firewall technically is not bypassed, it is simply circumvented since the port responsible for web surfing was used here. It shows that you haven’t understood the article well.
Of course you wouldn’t download stuff in your office computer if you knew it was not allowed. COMMON SENSE I guess?
There are a lot of practical, and probably legal ways this tip can work, I just don’t get the part of “breaching” or riking security that you mention since the firewall was never literally bypassed.
Anyway, great article!
its does a double download. but it works. better than nothing
thank you.
it’s best torrent bypass firewall…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
It does not work, just says started and remains on 0%
Hats off to your job dude. it really works. i am behind my college firewall. initially before using torrent relay i coulg get only a speeb of about 30-50kbps but now it is crossing 150kbps. thanks a lot. keep it up.
Yea it works!! All good… free users can only download 2 per day though so choose carefully!
bdgr’s advice should be carefully read by anybody actually considering using this at work.
nice,
really helps me,
ThaNx.
Brilliant and not against company policy. Actually the stuff I down load I use where I work. By the way rules were made to be broken… what would happen to evolution if they werent.
it works but the limit is to small (400 mb)
i wish if it is (800 mb) as mentioned above
then your service will be 100%
Or just block the torrelay.com website like I did, that ends it all.
Actually, on our bloxx device, the words “tor” and “torrent” are keyword blocked. EVeryone is a winner.
(Obviously I have a bypass)
It’s not FREE anymoreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee:(
I reckon that’s silly, have they ever heard of charity, i was looking forward to downloading torrents at school and not using my own traffic hahaha
pardon me, but dont go for torrelay.com. it’s no more a free service. they need you to subscribe.
please suggest another site.
thank u.
